Common sinusitis symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Pain or pressure of the face
  • Congestion or difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Frequent infections
  • Teeth pain
  • Sore throat
  • Bad breath
  • Yellow of green nasal discharge
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Tired/Lack energy
  • Low fever

How does it work?

Balloon Sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that opens sinus passages relieving pain and pressure and allowing normal nasal drainage.

  • After local anesthesia numbs your nasal and sinus tissue, your physician will insert and gently inflate a balloon to dilate the treatment area.
  • Inflamed sinuses are gently inflated to expand the sinus pathways and restore drainage.
  • After five seconds, the balloon is deflated and removed.
  • Sinuses remain open allowing a return to normal sinus pressure. For adults, Balloon Sinuplasty is a simple in-office procedure. Pediatric procedures are performed at one of our outpatient partners: Surgery Center of Decatur and Madison Surgery Center.

Why do it?

  • 20% or more chronic sinusitis sufferers do not respond to prescription medication. For these patients, Balloon Sinuplasty may be recommended.
  • It is a safe, minimally invasive treatment option used by more than 300,000 patients. Unlike other treatment options, this procedure does not remove bone or tissue - there are no incisions.
  • Patients experience a fast recovery time with most returning to normal activities within two days. A recent trial compared traditional sinus surgery to balloon sinus dilation and found that symptom improvement was rated the same or better with Balloon Sinuplasty with significantly quicker recovery and follow up.
  • For adults, the Balloon Sinuplasty procedure can be done in a doctor’s office with local anesthesia. It is an effective alternative for patients not responding to ongoing medical therapy and cannot undergo surgery requiring general anesthetic. Pediatric procedures will be performed at either the Surgery Center of Decatur or Madison Surgery Center.
